Chinese classical passages are retained below. Their English renderings are original editorial glosses, not quotations from a named translation.
At the beginning of something new, methods, responsibilities and the experience needed to set priorities may all be missing. Difficulty does not necessarily make the idea worthless, but enthusiasm alone cannot carry you past it. Zhun places this unformed situation in six different positions, helping you distinguish what requires time, what calls for assistance and what may need to be set aside.
The figure
03 · ䷂ · Zhun · Difficulty at the Beginning · Zhūn
Zhun is hexagram 3 in the traditional King Wen sequence, written ䷂. Its lower trigram is Zhen ☳ and its upper trigram is Kan ☵, traditionally associated with thunder and water respectively. Count from the bottom: first nine, six in the second place, six in the third, six in the fourth, nine in the fifth and top six. An unbroken stroke is yang and a broken stroke is yin. Nine and six identify these line types; they do not add further lines.

Judgment: the received text
屯:元亨,利貞。勿用有攸往,利建侯。
Zhun: great, favorable progress; steadfast rightness is beneficial. Do not rush to advance. Establishing lords is beneficial.
In the traditional reading followed by Legge, development remains possible and calls for correctness and steadiness, while hasty advance is inappropriate. Establishing lords belongs to an ancient setting of appointing rulers and allocating administrative authority. It cannot simply be translated as “you should immediately start a business and become its leader.”
The character 屯 is pronounced zhūn here. A beginner may understand it as difficulty amid beginnings: change is already in motion, but an appropriate order has not yet formed. The modern application is to identify the necessary conditions, rather than romanticise every setback as a prelude to success.
Reading the Ten Wings
The Tuan and Xiang commentaries belong to the Yizhuan, among the writings commonly called the Ten Wings. The following discussion distinguishes commentary from the hexagram and line statements, then identifies the modern learning application.
The Tuan speaks of movement within danger. The Xiang uses clouds and thunder as its image and describes the exemplary person’s work of organising or ordering. The commentary connects early confusion with the task of making workable arrangements.
This can suggest separating a tangled problem into matters that can be handled individually. Which information is missing? Which decisions have no responsible person? Which promises already exceed present capacity? These are modern questions proposed by this article.
The six lines, from bottom to top
初九 · Establish a steady starting point
磐桓,利居貞,利建侯。
Lingering at the outset. Remaining steadfast and establishing lords are beneficial.
The opening image suggests lingering and difficulty moving ahead. Legge’s interpretation emphasises remaining correct and firm when progress is hard, while continuing the theme of establishing authority and responsibility.
If several people plan to work together, choosing a coordinator and one small objective may help more than opening many lines of activity at once. Remaining briefly at the starting point can be part of creating the conditions for action.
六二 · Slow down to understand an approach
屯如邅如,乘馬班如,匪寇婚媾,女子貞不字,十年乃字。
Difficulty and hesitation; the horses turn back. The visitors are suitors, not raiders. The woman remains firm and does not marry; only after ten years does she marry.
Horses circle or turn back. The approaching party is distinguished as a suitor rather than a raider; the woman initially does not accept the marriage and agrees only later. Legge develops the scene within its marriage setting.
The learning emphasis can be on withholding a rushed judgment or agreement. When offered a collaboration today, first establish its purpose and conditions. The text’s ten years does not calculate a reader’s wedding date, and it cannot invalidate anyone’s refusal.
六三 · A goal may be set aside when guidance is missing
即鹿无虞,惟入于林中,君子幾不如舍,往吝。
Pursuing deer without a forester leads into the woods. The exemplary person sees that leaving the chase is better; continuing brings regret.
Pursuing a deer without a forester familiar with the terrain leads only into the woods. The text then considers abandoning the chase. Yu here concerns the role of a guide or keeper of the forest.
When even essential knowledge is missing, further investment of effort may not make up the gap through persistence alone. Seek information or an experienced person first. If the cost has become inappropriate, allow yourself to stop this particular attempt.
六四 · A suitable connection can change the situation
乘馬班如,求婚媾,往吉,无不利。
The horses turn back. Seek the marriage connection: going forward brings good fortune, with nothing unfavourable.
The circling horses appear again, but the line then turns toward seeking a marriage connection. Legge emphasises advancing with the help of a corresponding person.
A modern parallel is to explain the difficulty clearly and find a collaborator willing to undertake a specific part. Check what that person can actually do. A warm relationship does not mean that every problem has already been solved.
九五 · Distinguish the scale that current conditions can support
屯其膏,小貞吉,大貞凶。
Its benefits are held back. Steadfastness in small matters brings good fortune; in great matters, misfortune.
Legge connects the rich substance, gao, with benefits that could be extended but are obstructed. The judgments concerning small and large matters are distinguished.
If resources are limited, complete a version with a clear scope first. A small step does not guarantee success, but can bring effort into proportion with capacity. This is not a universal rule against undertaking any large plan.
上六 · Do not let difficulty become repeated depletion
乘馬班如,泣血漣如。
The horses turn back; tears of blood flow without cease.
The final line again describes circling horses, with tears of blood expressing severe distress. It is a sorrowful classical scene, not a forecast that the reader will be injured or encounter disaster.
If the same approach brings only further exhaustion, reduce the load, stop repeating the attempt and seek someone who can help clarify the problem. Recognising that a route is presently blocked is information worth taking seriously.
An original modern example · Starting an oral-history group
Several friends want to record memories of their neighbourhood. At first they plan interviews, photographs and an exhibition all at once, without even establishing whether interviewees want their material made public. The coordinator reduces the first task to one interview with explicit consent and asks an experienced person to help design the questions.
One person thinks this is too slow, while another keeps adding subjects. The group separates what could be done later from what must be completed this week, and agrees how to handle the material and attribution. The ordering suggested by Zhun becomes an actual division of work and clear boundaries.
If an interview should not continue, the group can stop or change subjects. “Beginnings are always hard” cannot justify disregarding someone’s wishes. The lines offer points of observation; actual decisions to proceed or withdraw still depend on real conditions.
Misreadings to avoid
-
Zhun’s difficulties do not guarantee later success. Encouraging judgments coexist with a sorrowful final line. Marriage, ten years and tears of blood first need to be understood in their textual settings.
-
A hexagram cannot predict illness, a wedding date or investment returns. Seeking help and reducing scope in the example are learning analogies, not major decisions made for the reader.
Practice
-
Turn your largest current difficulty into a specific question. Is it about information, ability, the division of work or an unclear purpose?
-
Identify someone who can genuinely supply a missing condition, and write down exactly what you need to ask.
-
State a reason that would lead you to adjust or stop, so persistence has an observable boundary.
Read alongside
Meng (hexagram-04)
Zhun focuses on how a new situation gradually takes shape. Meng can extend the discussion to learning and asking for guidance when understanding is limited. Missing order in an undertaking and missing knowledge in a person often occur together, but require different responses.
When reading Zhun, make “Why is this so difficult?” more specific: which missing condition would allow the undertaking to begin working?
Textual note
The first nine retains 磐 from the main text of the cited page, which also records the variant 盤. Other quotations retain the received character forms; punctuation is editorial.
