Pi (Standstill): find the point where communication is blocked

In one sentence: When things are stuck, locate the obstruction to communication or action, keep your boundaries and look for a grounded small change.

Chinese classical passages are retained below. Their English renderings are original editorial glosses, not quotations from a named translation.

Sometimes an undertaking has no obvious quarrel yet will not move. You ask a question and no one truly answers; people agree verbally but act on different understandings. Pi helps pause and identify this absence of connection. Here 否 is pronounced pǐ, differently from its pronunciation in the everyday Chinese expression for “whether or not.”

The hexagram describes obstruction, but also different positions within it and subsequent change. You need not begin by labelling yourself unlucky or deciding that a collaborator is a bad person. The useful task is to describe the blockage more precisely.

Learning question: Where precisely is the obstruction, and what action has adequate grounds while remaining within my capacity?

The figure

12 · ䷋ · Pi · Standstill · Pǐ

Pi is hexagram 12 in the traditional King Wen sequence, written ䷋. Its lower trigram is Kun ☷ and its upper trigram is Qian ☰. From the bottom upward, three yin lines are followed by three yang lines: first six, six in the second place, six in the third, nine in the fourth, nine in the fifth and top nine. Its trigrams exchange positions with those of Tai, but these are distinct hexagrams with complete texts of their own, not two states of a card turned over.

Judgment: the received text

否之匪人,不利君子貞,大往小來。

Standstill between people does not favour the exemplary person’s steadfastness. The great departs and the small arrives.

The ancient opening phrase needs care; it cannot simply be read as the modern insult “not human.” Legge understands it as a lack of good understanding between groups of people, followed by the unfavourable environment facing the exemplary person. This named interpretation directs attention to relationships and order, rather than turning the judgment into an abusive label.

In the traditional structural reading used here, the great refers to yang and the small to yin. The lower trigram is inner and the upper outer. Pi has yin within and yang outside, opposite to Tai’s inner yang and outer yin. The departure of the great and arrival of the small thus explain the structure, rather than rank people or directly describe monetary losses or a future change of position. For an initial learning question, ask which facts fail to reach those who need them, which views receive no real response and which agreements have not been formed. These questions can be checked without assuming that personal fortune is fixed.

Reading the Ten Wings

The Tuan and Xiang are chapters of the Yizhuan, among the writings commonly called the Ten Wings. We first examine how these commentaries interpret the figure, then identify this article’s modern application.

The Tuan develops Pi through heaven and earth, and upper and lower, failing to interact. The Xiang discusses restraining the display of virtue to avoid difficulty, and cautions the exemplary person against being enticed by a salary. These are commentary interpretations of circumstance and conduct, not the original judgment.

A modern use of this perspective is to consider how to reduce unnecessary depletion, preserve judgment and avoid unsuitable commitments made for short-term benefits when rules are unclear and views are not heard. This does not mean withdrawing whenever difficulties arise, nor decide anyone’s resignation, relationship or other major choice.

The six lines, from bottom to top

初六 · Recognise connected circumstances and choose a firm basis

拔茅茹,以其彙,貞吉,亨。

Pulling up grass draws together its connected roots. Steadfast rightness brings good fortune and favorable progress.

Pulling grass and drawing out connected roots appears here as in Tai’s first line. Yet Tai’s favourable advance is replaced by an emphasis on steadfastness. Similar images do not make the two statements identical; the surrounding hexagram still matters.

When communication fails, check the situation with other affected people and explain your own position. Making connections need not mean recruiting a faction. Confirming facts and shared needs is useful; amplifying unverified dissatisfaction is not.

六二 · Ask what cooperation is actually resolving

包承,小人吉,大人否,亨。

Accommodating and complying: good fortune for petty people; the great person endures standstill and finds a way through.

This line brings together accommodating obedience, petty people, great people and standstill, so neither punctuation nor interpretation should be rushed. Legge emphasises endurance and compliance while distinguishing the outcomes of different positions. Great and petty people carry ethical and social-status contexts in ancient usage; they should not be immediately applied to contemporary colleagues.

Ask whether your cooperation clarifies the problem or only keeps an appearance of harmony. Sometimes it is useful to postpone an argument and complete necessary work; at other times a problem needs to be stated explicitly. The choice still depends on the particular facts.

六三 · Some difficulties first need acknowledgment

包羞。

Holding shame within.

The third six contains only two Chinese characters, leaving considerable interpretive room. Legge reads it as shame over concealed intentions. That is his interpretive direction, not sufficient evidence that either the reader or another person harbours malice.

When work remains blocked, ask whether you are withholding something you need to explain. Have you promised what you cannot do, or are you afraid to admit a forgotten task? Honestly supplying missing information is one possible modern response. It does not require pressuring yourself through shame.

九四 · Action needs clear grounds

有命,无咎,疇離祉。

With a mandate, there is no blame; companions share the blessing.

Legge’s notes record different readings of the mandate: it may concern heaven’s mandate or a ruler’s command. Preserving that disagreement is more honest than declaring that the universe is ordering the reader to act.

In a shared undertaking today, this can prompt questions about clear responsibility. Who may decide? Who will be affected? Do the relevant people know and understand? This is an organisational analogy, not the only translation of the ancient phrase. Instructions from a superior cannot excuse every action.

九五 · Strengthen the foundation after the situation eases

休否,大人吉。其亡其亡,繫于苞桑。

Standstill eases: good fortune for the great person. “What if it is lost, what if it is lost?” Fasten it to the rooted mulberry.

Standstill begins to rest or ease, yet the line repeatedly recalls the possibility of loss and uses fastening to mulberry roots as an image of stability. Legge likewise retains caution within improvement. Reading only the favourable words for the great person would miss the rest of the line.

Once people reach an arrangement, write down responsibilities and timing, and agree how to handle a recurrence of the problem. A successful conversation does not need constant anxiety to protect it. Clear records and workable arrangements can give the new understanding a firmer basis.

上九 · The possibility of overturning obstruction opens

傾否,先否後喜。

Standstill is overturned: obstruction first, joy afterward.

The final line concludes with standstill overturned and joy following obstruction. The Xiang likewise questions the persistence of standstill at its ending. These passages present a possibility of change; they cannot assign real problems a deadline for automatic improvement.

If difficulty has eased, identify what changed: information became clear, responsibilities were rearranged or discussion took a different form. Understanding the cause gives you a chance to sustain the change. The line does not guarantee that time alone will help without any examination of conditions.

An original modern example · A collaboration that keeps going in circles

Three people plan an issue of a community newsletter. Every discussion ends with “as soon as possible,” but one person believes their role is only to offer suggestions while another expects a complete article from them. What looks like delay is actually a mismatch of responsibilities.

One participant first lists confirmed facts: which sections have writers, which remain unclaimed and how much time each person can contribute. She neither labels anyone a petty person nor suppresses the difficulty for the sake of harmony. They reduce the issue’s scope, identify an owner for each section and allow anyone unable to participate as planned to say so directly.

At the next check, they see whether the changes worked. If a section still has no one to undertake it, they remove or adjust it instead of repeating a vague “soon.” Pi can help them identify the obstruction, while the change in outcome also depends on these clear, practical actions.

Misreadings to avoid

  • Pi is not a verdict on someone’s character. In particular, “petty people” must not be used to confirm an unverified suspicion.

  • Standstill followed by joy cannot become a promise of better luck after a fixed number of days. The text presents an image of change; actual change still depends on conditions.

  • In relationships, health or finances, a hexagram cannot establish malicious intent, diagnose disease or determine the outcome of a transaction. Problems requiring action call for verifiable information and appropriate help.

Practice

  1. Replace “everything is stuck” with a verifiable statement, such as “two tasks still have no clearly identified owner.”

  2. Distinguish one step you can complete directly, one that needs someone else’s clear response and one you genuinely cannot decide at present.

  3. If the problem eases, record the specific change that helped. If it does not, examine whether your original explanation needs revision.

Read alongside

Tai (hexagram-11)

Tai’s Qian below Kun and Pi’s Kun below Qian provide two traditional images of interaction and its absence. Read together, they help compare conditions rather than create identities of good or bad fortune. Connections need care when they work and examination when they are blocked. Both kinds of learning require real evidence.

The most useful thing to retain after reading Pi may be a more precise question: what exactly has still not been made clear?

Textual note

The fifth nine’s 苞桑 uses the variant 苞 explicitly recorded on the cited Chinese page; its main text instead has 包. Other quotations retain the received character forms, with punctuation supplied for this reading.
