A good idea can make us want to join immediately; praise can make us feel the undertaking has already succeeded. Enthusiasm includes the power of shared enjoyment and mobilization, but also describes boasting, dependence, absorption, and change. Studying it helps distinguish the value of enthusiasm from the risk of being carried away.
Identifying the hexagram
Yù is hexagram 16 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with the symbol ䷏. Its lower trigram is Kun ☷ and its upper trigram is Zhen ☳; their traditional images are earth and thunder, respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初六, 六二, 六三, 九四, 六五, 上六. A solid line is yang and a broken line is yin. Nine and six in the line headings identify yang and yin; they do not indicate additional lines.
The six lines are numbered from the bottom upward; the figure below displays their actual positions from top to bottom.

Hexagram statement
豫:利建侯行師。
Editorial rendering: Enthusiasm: it is favorable to establish lords and deploy an army.
The hexagram statement directly concerns installing feudal lords and deploying troops, an explicitly ancient political setting. Legge understands it in a state of harmony and delight in which people willingly respond. The name should not let us forget that these actions involve more than private happiness.
A contemporary use is to consider how collective emotion becomes cooperation. Ask about purpose, capacity, and arrangements before deciding what to contribute. Many supporters do not automatically make a plan appropriate.

Interpretation in the Ten Wings
The Commentary on the Judgment (Tuan zhuan) and the Commentary on the Images (Xiang zhuan) belong to the Yi zhuan, the commentaries commonly called the Ten Wings. Their interpretations are kept separate below from the hexagram and line statements, followed by applications for contemporary learning.
The Commentary on the Judgment explains Enthusiasm through “顺以动,” moving in accord. The Commentary on the Images takes thunder rising vigorously from the earth and describes former kings making music to honor virtue. Music and ritual here organize shared feeling.
A contemporary application might use activities or shared experiences to encourage participation, while making their purpose clear and preserving choice. An excited atmosphere must not become a way to rush people into commitments they have not thought through.

Six lines, from bottom to top
The quotations below are line statements; the explanations that follow are original learning commentary. Good fortune, no blame, and regret belong to ancient divinatory language and cannot be turned directly into guarantees about an individual’s future.
初六 · Do not mistake excitement for achievement
鳴豫,凶。
Editorial rendering: Proclaiming one’s delight: misfortune.
Legge reads voiced enthusiasm as openly proclaiming one’s delight, even boastfully. The line does not approve it simply because the person is happy.
When an opportunity first appears, prepare before discussing grand plans. Promising too much too early can turn excitement into the burden of maintaining an image.
[zhouyi-16; legge1882-16]
六二 · Keep sound judgment amid the excitement
介于石,不終日,貞吉。
Editorial rendering: Firm as a rock, not waiting out the day. Right constancy brings good fortune.
“Firm as a rock” supplies an image of steadiness, while “not waiting out the day” suggests timely recognition and action. Legge emphasizes quiet, foresighted discernment.
Even when everyone agrees, you can still verify a crucial condition. If the plan is unsuitable, do not keep delaying your question merely to preserve the mood.
[zhouyi-16; legge1882-16]
六三 · Do not wait for someone else’s approval before every action
盱豫,悔。遲有悔。
Editorial rendering: Looking upward for delight: regret. Delay brings regret.
Legge reads upward-looking enthusiasm as looking to another for favor and becoming absorbed in satisfaction; delay in recognizing this brings regret. That is his interpretive approach to the brief ancient wording.
If you await an influential person’s nod at every step, check whether you already know what needs doing. Consult where consultation is necessary, and take responsibility for the parts that do not require it.
[zhouyi-16; legge1882-16]
九四 · Use your ability to inspire others for a shared purpose
由豫,大有得。勿疑。朋盍簪。
Editorial rendering: The source of shared delight brings great gain. Do not doubt; friends gather together.
Legge reads the fourth nine as the center from which shared delight arises and around which friends gather. This is more than catching the prevailing mood: someone makes action possible.
A person who inspires others also needs clear arrangements and fulfilled promises. “Do not doubt” cannot be rewritten as stopping all questioning, nor does it require participants to surrender their judgment to a rallying figure.
[zhouyi-16; legge1882-16]
六五 · Acknowledge persistent problems beneath apparent flourishing
貞疾,恆不死。
Editorial rendering: Persistent illness, yet one does not die.
This line uses the image of ongoing illness without death. Legge preserves the metaphor and discusses it through the relationship between a ruler and a powerful minister.
This article draws no conclusions about anyone’s lifespan or illness. As a nonmedical contemporary analogy, ask whether an activity appears lively while remaining chronically understaffed and poorly organized, barely keeping going.
[zhouyi-16; legge1882-16]
上六 · Long absorption does not rule out change
冥豫,成有渝,无咎。
Editorial rendering: Lost in darkened delight, but even when it has taken hold, change remains possible. No blame.
Darkened enthusiasm portrays being lost in satisfaction, yet the second half retains room for change. Legge likewise does not describe the final situation as entirely without a turning point.
If you discover that enjoying attention has displaced the work, begin with a specific correction. You do not have to prove that every past choice was wrong before you may adjust the present.

Turning an exciting event idea into practical arrangements
Original contemporary scenario
The following contemporary scenario was created for learning.
During a discussion, everyone eagerly proposes a neighborhood music-sharing event. Instead of announcing a date immediately, the organizer first checks venue conditions, participation formats, and the work involved, so willing participants know clearly what they are agreeing to.
During preparation, someone notices that the original program is too full. The organizer accepts this point, reduces the scope, and leaves participants room to choose freely. He does not treat the questioner as a spoilsport.
Whether the event goes well still depends on actual preparation. Enthusiasm’s learning value lies in letting energy support action rather than letting the atmosphere replace judgment.
Common misreadings
-
Enthusiasm does not guarantee that collective excitement brings good results. It does not support using an excited atmosphere to pressure people to join, pay, or promise.
-
The illness language in the fifth six is a classical image requiring source-based explanation. It cannot be used for medical judgments, lifespan predictions, or reassurances that someone need not seek care.
Three practices
-
Turn a recent exciting idea into one bounded action rather than a grand slogan.
-
Identify one unverified condition and invite someone able to offer a different view to check it.
-
Write down when you would be willing to adjust or withdraw, so that others’ high expectations alone do not keep you going.
Related reading
Following (hexagram-17)
Enthusiasm concerns the feelings and motivation behind a collective response. Following asks how and what to follow. Even after becoming willing to respond, you still need grounds for your choices.
Closing question
When reading Enthusiasm, ask: is this energy helping me see the next step, or making me overlook conditions I would ordinarily examine carefully?
Textual note
The fourth nine uses the variant 簪 explicitly listed in the source; the page’s main text instead has 戠.
