40 · ䷧ · Jiě — Deliverance

Studying Jiě (Deliverance): completing the work after a problem loosens

When an obstacle eases, identify what can end and promptly complete the follow-up that is still needed.

Explore your six-line cast →

When a misunderstanding is cleared up or a delayed matter finally receives a response, it is tempting to turn the page immediately. Jiě discusses release and loosening, while distinguishing whether further action is needed. It does not guarantee that every problem has vanished; it offers a chance to reassess tasks, ties, and completion.

Identity and line order

Jiě is hexagram 40 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with symbol ䷧. The lower trigram is Kǎn ☵ and the upper trigram is Zhèn ☳; their traditional images are water and thunder, respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初六、九二、六三、九四、六五、上六. A solid line is yang and a broken line is yin. Nine and six in the line labels designate yang and yin; they are not additional line numbers.

Hexagram statement

解:利西南,无所往,其來復吉。有攸往,夙吉。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: Release: the southwest is favorable. With nowhere further to go, returning brings good fortune. With somewhere to go, an early start brings good fortune.

Legge reads Jiě as untying knots and releasing a complicated situation. If nothing remains to be done, return to normal; if necessary action remains, handle it promptly. The statement distinguishes these cases, so the lesson is not simply to move forward as fast as possible.

Today, ask how far the obstacle has actually been removed, which extra arrangements can be lifted, and which responsibilities remain. The traditional southwest direction is not a direct route for present-day action.

Interpretations in the Ten Wings

The Commentary on the Judgment and the Commentary on the Images belong to the commentarial collection known as the Yìzhuàn, usually called the Ten Wings. Below, these commentaries are kept separate from the hexagram and line statements, followed by modern learning applications.

The Commentary on the Judgment explains release as moving out of danger. The Commentary on the Images uses thunder and rain, speaking of pardoning errors and showing leniency toward offenses. Their background is ancient governance and clemency.

Today, once problems and responsibilities are established, reduce unnecessary repeated blame. Forgiveness cannot be compelled, however, and reconciliation does not remove the choice to protect yourself, seek help, or defend your rights.

The six lines, from bottom to top

初六 · As release begins, do not invent extra problems

无咎。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: No blame.

The brief first line is explained in the Commentary on the Images through the meeting of firm and yielding; Legge likewise keeps the judgment concise. It does not permit assuming that all actual responsibilities have vanished.

After clearing up a small misunderstanding, confirm mutual understanding and return to ordinary communication. You need not replay the argument to prove seriousness; genuinely unresolved parts still need to be stated.

九二 · Identify actual results and their basis

田獲三狐,得黃矢,貞吉。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: Hunting, taking three foxes and obtaining a yellow arrow: steadfast correctness brings good fortune.

Catching three foxes and obtaining a yellow arrow are ancient hunting images. Legge interprets them through removing harmful elements and maintaining correctness.

A modern analogy is verifying which specific problems have been removed. Three and yellow are not personal lucky numbers or colors, nor grounds for casually calling actual people deceitful foxes.

六三 · Check whether arrangements expose unnecessary risks

負且乘,致寇至,貞吝。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: Carrying a burden while riding a carriage invites raiders; even firm correctness brings regret.

Legge explains the line through a burden-bearer occupying a carriage, a mismatch of roles, while preserving the ancient judgment about inviting raiders. That historical class assumption needs to be identified.

Today, check whether resources match responsibilities without blaming victims for another person's wrongdoing. Risks can be discussed, but a hexagram cannot transfer responsibility away from the person who causes harm.

九四 · Some ties need explicit release

解而拇,朋至斯孚。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: Release your big toe; friends arrive and trust follows.

The big toe is a bodily image; Legge connects it to an inappropriate relationship between lines, not to a method of treating an actual body.

A modern association is removing obsolete or unsuitable constraints so that new cooperation has a clear basis. This never means bodily harm, and no single line can require ending a relationship with someone.

六五 · Release should become visible in actual conduct

君子惟有解,吉;有孚于小人。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: The noble person brings release: good fortune. Even petty people have grounds for trust.

Legge interprets this as fulfilling the duty of removing obstacles, thereby convincing others. It remains an interpretation in the setting of ancient governance.

In ordinary cooperation, actually changing conduct after acknowledging a problem rebuilds trust better than merely saying it is over. The statement cannot decide for those involved who should be forgiven or whether cooperation should continue.

上六 · Handle the specific obstacle that remains

公用射隼,于高墉之上,獲之,无不利。

Original editorial rendering; not a quotation from Legge: The lord shoots a falcon atop a high wall and takes it; nothing is unfavorable.

A falcon on a high wall is shot and captured in the final action image. Legge interprets it as removing a harmful element, not a direct instruction for modern use of force.

If a key unfinished item still prevents recovery, clearly arrange how to handle it. The target here is a task or process, not a person to be treated as prey that must be eliminated.

After a misunderstanding has been clarified

Original modern scenario

Two collaborators discover that their dispute arose from a change notice that was not shared. After checking it, they confirm the new arrangement and remove duplicate reporting introduced to cope with the conflict.

The old notice is still publicly displayed, however, so they arrange an update and clarify how future changes will be communicated. They resolve both the misunderstanding and a condition that could cause it to recur.

One person still needs time to rebuild trust. The other does not pressure them by saying that clarification means they may no longer feel hurt. Studying Jiě includes restoring ordinary life and respecting genuine follow-up needs.

Misreadings to avoid

  • Jiě does not guarantee immediate rescue, recovery from illness, or repaired relationships, and does not demand universal forgiveness. Actual conditions still require facts and the choices of those involved.

  • Toes, foxes, falcons, and hunting images must not support bodily harm, real-world violence, or dehumanizing descriptions of people.

Three practices

  1. List the specific problem already resolved and one follow-up item still unfinished.

  2. Identify a temporary burden that can be removed, so constraints do not continue after the problem ends.

  3. Explain how similar misunderstandings could be prevented and seek the views of those involved.

Jiǎn — Obstruction (hexagram-39)

Jiǎn helps find a path amid obstruction; Jiě helps distinguish actions after release. Continuing effort and timely completion both need reasons. Busyness itself is not responsibility.

A closing question

While reading Jiě, ask: what still needs doing for this relief to become a sustainable change?
