In Ge, 革 carries the image of leather as well as meanings of change and reform. The six lines move from binding with oxhide to the transformations of a tiger, a leopard, and a face, reminding readers that changes differ in depth. It does not call every dramatic action progress, nor require an eternal refusal of change for the sake of stability.
革 is hexagram 49 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with the symbol ䷰. Its lower trigram is 离☲ and its upper trigram is 兑☱, traditionally associated with fire and lake respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初九, 六二, 九三, 九四, 九五, 上六. A solid line is yang; a broken line is yin. Nine and six identify yang and yin in the line labels; they do not add extra lines.
Line structure (bottom to top): 1 0 1 1 1 0
Six-line figure, displayed top to bottom; line numbering starts at the bottom.

The judgment
革:已日乃孚,元亨。利貞。悔亡。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Change: after the day has passed, trust arises. Great favorable progress. Constancy is beneficial. Regret disappears.
The classical text used here reads 已日乃孚. Legge understands this as trust gradually becoming established after a change. Other traditions differ in wording and punctuation; this article does not use the phrase to calculate a particular date.
For modern study, it raises a practical question: why should people trust this change? Its reasons, process, and actual effects need to be understandable. Announcing a new name or slogan does not mean the problem has been addressed. Caution also does not mean that any person’s unease must prevent change.

Interpretation in the Ten Wings
The Commentary on the Judgment and the Commentary on the Images belong to the Yi Zhuan, the commentaries usually called the “Ten Wings.” Here their explanations are kept distinct from the judgment and line texts, before turning to modern applications for study.
The Commentary on the Judgment explains Ge through such expressions as water and fire extinguishing one another, then sets the seasons of heaven and earth alongside the political revolutions of Tang and Wu. This political and historical discussion is an expansion in the commentary and needs to be distinguished from the brief judgment.
The Commentary on the Images depicts fire within a lake and speaks of ordering the calendar and clarifying the seasons. For everyday affairs, this article draws on recognizing timing and making arrangements clear. It does not use ancient arguments about political legitimacy to endorse present-day violence or the seizure of power.
初九 · Restrain the impulse to act before conditions are ready
鞏用黃牛之革。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Bind firmly with yellow oxhide.
Yellow oxhide provides a firm binding. Legge considers the opening position unsuitable for launching a hasty change. It is not an instruction to restrain other people by force.
When first noticing a problem, collect examples and understand its causes before imposing the first solution that comes to mind on everyone. What needs restraint is the urge to act immediately, not other people’s opinions.

六二 · Action needs preparation and appropriate timing
已日乃革之,征吉,无咎。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: After the appropriate day has passed, make the change. Advancing is favorable, without blame.
已日 appears again here. Legge reads it as making a change after an appropriate interval. The point is the readiness of conditions, not any fixed number of waiting days.
If the existing arrangement truly has problems and an alternative has been discussed, explain clearly when the change will happen, how the transition will work, and who will be affected. Preparation should not delay action forever, but neither should it be skipped.

九三 · Important changes need repeated examination
征凶,貞厲,革言三就,有孚。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Advancing is unfavorable; constancy involves danger. When proposals for change have been settled three times, there is trust.
Hasty advance is unfavorable, and even someone who believes their position is right needs to remain alert. Discussion of change reaching agreement three times presents deliberation before trust. Legge likewise emphasizes careful consultation.
For a change affecting many people, let different users test it in practice. Three is not a mechanical requirement to hold three meetings. Repetition should bring new information, not simply renewed agreement with the same statement.

九四 · Make change concrete and credible
悔亡,有孚改命,吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Regret disappears. With trust, the mandate is changed: favorable.
改命 can concern changing commands, institutions, or political arrangements in antiquity. Legge links trust with changing regulations; this cannot be applied directly as a claim that a person’s destiny has been rewritten.
For a new rule to hold, explain why it is changing, whom it covers, and how it will work. A leader’s willingness to undergo the same scrutiny often matters more than demanding everyone’s unconditional trust first.

九五 · Substantial change should be visible
大人虎變,未占有孚。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: A great person transforms like a tiger. Trust is present even before divination.
The tiger’s markings are distinct. Legge uses this to explain major change with clearly visible effects, whose credibility need not depend only on divination.
If a way of working together has genuinely improved, people should be able to observe shorter waits, clearer explanations, or responses to problems. Observable changes persuade more than repeated declarations that reform has been accomplished.

上六 · Distinguish depths of change, and know when to settle
君子豹變,小人革面,征凶,居貞吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The exemplary person transforms like a leopard; the lesser person changes the face. Advancing is unfavorable; remaining constant in place is favorable.
A leopard’s transformation and a changed face contrast inner and outer, deeper and shallower change. Legge preserves the ancient classification of exemplary and lesser people. The final phrase warns of the risk of continuing to push forward.
Today, one facial expression cannot tell us who is merely pretending. Examine change through sustained behavior and give new arrangements time to settle. Avoid overturning a completed adjustment simply for the sake of novelty.

Redesigning a shared booking process
Original modern scenario
A studio’s booking system often leads members to register the same reservation twice. The coordinator first gathers specific conflicts and finds that scattered records are the cause, rather than simply deciding that people are uncooperative. She proposes a single point of access and asks people with different habits to test it.
Before switching, the group explains how existing bookings will be retained and who will answer questions. It helps those unfamiliar with the new method. Problems found in the trial are recorded rather than hidden to prove the plan correct.
Once the process stabilizes, the coordinator stops frequently changing tools and turns to observing the results. Here, Ge asks whether change is credible, whether it solves problems, and when it should be allowed to settle.
Avoiding misreadings
-
Ge does not predict political events or justify present-day violence, coercion, or destruction.
-
The tiger, leopard, and changed face are not tests of character. 已日 does not supply a date when someone’s luck will change.
Three exercises
-
State one specific problem the change is meant to solve, and record observable evidence.
-
List the people affected and determine what explanations and transitional arrangements they need.
-
Decide how to assess the new method’s effects, including the circumstances in which to keep revising or stop making changes.

Ding — The Cauldron (hexagram-50): Ge concerns changing an old arrangement; Ding concerns how a new supporting structure and order work in practice. After change, someone still needs to maintain the new routine. Reform cannot remain forever at the moment of announcement.
When reading Ge, ask: what actual differences could make others trust this adjustment, beyond hearing how determined I am?
Textual note
The judgment and second line retain 已日 from the consulted page. It is not silently changed to 己日, and no date-calculation method is built from this character.
