The traveler in Lü has no firmly established home ground. Lodging, resources, help from companions, and others’ acceptance all matter. The hexagram describes temporary shelter but also a lodging fire and laughter turning to tears. Its instability can be understood without blaming every difficulty outsiders meet on their own inadequacy.
旅 is hexagram 56 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with the symbol ䷷. Its lower trigram is 艮☶ and its upper trigram is 离☲, traditionally associated with mountain and fire respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初六, 六二, 九三, 九四, 六五, 上九. A solid line is yang; a broken line is yin. Nine and six identify yang and yin in the line labels; they do not add extra lines.
Line structure (bottom to top): 0 0 1 1 0 1
Six-line figure, displayed top to bottom; line numbering starts at the bottom.

The judgment
旅:小亨,旅貞吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The traveler: limited favorable progress. The traveler’s constancy is favorable.
Legge explains Lü as the condition of a traveler or stranger in another place, emphasizing caution and uprightness. His account retains ancient orders of status and cannot be applied directly as a formula for success in modern migration, travel, or job-seeking.
This article’s focus is that methods from familiar surroundings may not suit a new setting. Checking basic arrangements and ways of interacting helps preserve choice. “Limited favorable progress” also suggests proportionate aims rather than a need to prove total control immediately upon arrival.

Interpretation in the Ten Wings
The Commentary on the Judgment and the Commentary on the Images belong to the Yi Zhuan, the commentaries usually called the “Ten Wings.” Here their explanations are kept distinct from the judgment and line texts, before turning to modern applications for study.
The Commentary on the Judgment explains Lü through such ideas as stillness joined with brightness. The Commentary on the Images depicts fire on a mountain, speaking of clarity and caution in punishment and not prolonging imprisonment. The latter belongs to ancient judicial ethics; it cannot grant individuals authority to punish others.
In everyday interaction, one can draw on caution and avoiding unnecessary delay: explain rules, respond promptly, and avoid leaving temporary residents or newcomers indefinitely confused. This is an analogy proposed here for ordinary affairs.
初六 · Do not let insecurity narrow your view to petty gains and losses
旅瑣瑣,斯其所取災。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The traveler is caught in petty concerns; this is how calamity is brought upon oneself.
瑣瑣 conveys smallness, pettiness, or a constrained condition. Legge explains its unfavorable aspect through narrow conduct. Such moral interpretation has limits; it cannot establish that every traveler’s misfortune is self-inflicted.
In a new environment, distinguish basic needs from passing disputes. Small problems deserve solutions, but devoting all attention to winning an argument can obscure more important arrangements.

六二 · Settling in consists of concrete conditions
旅即次,懷其資,得僮僕貞。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The traveler reaches a lodging, carries resources, and gains a faithful young servant.
Lodging, carried resources, and a dependable servant form a combination of supports for an ancient traveler. Legge likewise reads a situation in which the basic conditions are fairly well provided.
Modern application does not inherit the master-servant institution. Instead, check accommodation, necessary belongings, contact arrangements, and voluntary cooperation. Help should rest on respect and clear agreement; helpers are not resources to order about at will.

九三 · Losing a foothold and assistance amplifies instability
旅焚其次,喪其僮僕,貞厲。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The traveler’s lodging burns; the young servant is lost. Even constancy involves danger.
The lodging burns and the servant is lost: the line connects several losses. Legge’s commentary associates this with forceful conduct, but that is not a causal explanation for every real fire.
An ordinary analogy is misunderstanding or inappropriate communication reducing already limited support. Repair what can be repaired promptly. If there is actual danger, address safety first rather than waiting for a turning point suggested by the ancient text.

九四 · Temporary provision does not necessarily bring belonging
旅于處,得其資斧,我心不快。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The traveler stays in a place and gains resources and an axe. My heart is not happy.
The traveler finds a stopping place and obtains resources and an axe, yet remains unhappy. Legge distinguishes temporary lodging from a true home and preserves the difference between outward conditions and inward feeling.
On joining a team, even with tools and tasks in place, you may not yet understand its relationships. Allow time to adjust and seek clear communication. You need not appear entirely at ease as soon as you arrive.

六五 · Appropriate participation may require a limited contribution
射雉一矢亡,終以譽命。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Shooting a pheasant, one arrow is lost. In the end, praise and appointment follow.
An arrow is lost in shooting a pheasant, followed eventually by praise and appointment. Legge relates the pheasant to an ancient gift presented at an audience and emphasizes its role in social interaction.
Today, contribute a specific piece of work within your ability so others can get to know you. Contribution and recognition are not a guaranteed exchange: hoping for acceptance does not require unlimited giving or entitle you to demand a return.

上九 · Do not let temporary success obscure the fragility of being a guest
鳥焚其巢,旅人先笑後號咷。喪牛于易,凶。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The bird’s nest burns. The traveler first laughs, then cries out and weeps. The ox is lost through carelessness. Unfavorable.
A bird’s nest burns, and laughter turns to weeping in a sharp reversal. Legge explains the lost ox through the loss of a gentle, measured manner, while also questioning that symbolic reading.
A modern reminder is to continue respecting the place and other people’s boundaries after gaining temporary convenience. This is not a forecast of fire or lost livestock and cannot justify blaming those who suffer actual disasters.

Joining a short project in another city for the first time
Original modern scenario
A designer travels to an unfamiliar city for a two-week project. She first confirms working hours, equipment use, and contact arrangements, and asks about practices she needs to understand. She does not assume that her former process can simply replace local methods.
Initially she still feels uncomfortable, so she clarifies uncertainties one by one and completes a defined deliverable within the agreed scope. She thanks collaborators for their help and reconfirms the time needed for additional tasks.
Before leaving, she organizes a handover, returns belongings, and explains unfinished matters. Here, Lü helps someone value temporary support and maintain proportion without turning being a guest into pressure to please everyone.
Avoiding misreadings
-
Lü does not predict good or bad travel outcomes, fires, or lost property, and cannot replace actual itinerary and safety information.
-
Exclusion or harm suffered by a guest or outsider should not automatically be explained as insufficient humility. Ancient master-servant relationships are not modern rules of cooperation.
Three exercises
-
List three basic arrangements that need checking first in an unfamiliar setting.
-
Identify a custom you do not yet understand and ask about it clearly and respectfully.
-
Plan one handover action for a temporary collaboration so that leaving also has a proper conclusion.

Gen — Keeping Still (hexagram-52): Gen emphasizes stopping in an appropriate place; Lü reveals the conditions for temporary footing and settling in. In unfamiliar surroundings, knowing where to pause and what to learn first often matters as much as continuing to act.
When reading Lü, ask: what most needs to be settled clearly first, and who can provide accurate, appropriate information?
