Sheng is easily read as good news about promotion or an uninterrupted rise. Yet its final line describes ascent in darkness: even at a height, one may keep climbing blindly. It explores the process of growth together with the support, steps, and limits on which growth depends. Instead of asking whether you will rise, ask how the next step is being formed.
升 is hexagram 46 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with the symbol ䷭. Its lower trigram is 巽☴ and its upper trigram is 坤☷, traditionally associated with wind and earth respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初六, 九二, 九三, 六四, 六五, 上六. A solid line is yang; a broken line is yin. Nine and six identify yang and yin in the line labels; they do not add extra lines.
Line structure (bottom to top): 0 1 1 0 0 0
Six-line figure, displayed top to bottom; line numbering starts at the bottom.

The judgment
升:元亨,用見大人,勿恤,南征吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Ascent: great favorable progress. Seek an audience with a great person; do not worry. An expedition south is favorable.
Legge understands Sheng as upward progress, discussing help from capable people and advancement at an appropriate time. The expression “a southern expedition” preserves an ancient language of direction and action. It cannot be turned directly into present-day directions for travel, relocation, or a job search.
For modern study, growth can be understood as relying on more than individual effort: suitable conditions, visible results, and useful guidance also matter. Whether to continue should still be decided by real purposes and capacity. A hexagram’s name cannot guarantee a position or income.

Interpretation in the Ten Wings
The Commentary on the Judgment and the Commentary on the Images belong to the Yi Zhuan, the commentaries usually called the “Ten Wings.” Here their explanations are kept distinct from the judgment and line texts, before turning to modern applications for study.
The Commentary on the Judgment explains the figure through such ideas as the yielding rising at the right time and gentle penetration joined with responsiveness. The Commentary on the Images depicts wood growing within the earth and speaks of accumulating small things to become high and great. The growing tree is an image, not evidence that everything improves if we simply wait.
This article understands small accumulations as purposeful daily work: gradually building knowledge, practice, feedback, and cooperation. Scattered busyness need not produce growth, so periodically check whether those small actions really support what you want to do.
初六 · Check what support is available at the beginning
允升,大吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: An ascent that is trusted or accepted: great good fortune.
In Legge’s reading, 允升 carries a sense of acknowledged or permitted advancement. His commentary also connects it with support from neighboring lines.
When starting to learn a skill, choose an appropriately difficult starting point and check that a person or resource can help you correct mistakes. Support need not undermine independence; it can reduce the cost of going astray at the outset.

九二 · Build connections through sincerity and substance
孚乃利用禴,无咎。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: With sincerity, a modest yue offering is appropriate; no blame.
Like the second line of Cui, this line mentions the yue offering. Legge uses a modest sacrificial rite to show that genuine sincerity can matter more than elaborate form.
When seeking guidance from someone experienced, clearly show what you have tried and where you are stuck. That is usually more helpful than exaggerated enthusiasm. Asking for help should respect the other person’s time and does not mean handing over all your decisions.

九三 · Even without obstacles, look at where you are going
升虛邑。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Ascending into an empty settlement.
Ascending into an empty settlement presents, in Legge’s interpretation, a picture of easy progress with little resistance. The line does not explain in detail how to manage things after entering.
When an opportunity seems easy to obtain, ask further questions: is there a real need, and what responsibilities follow? An open door does not automatically mean that everyone should go through it.

六四 · Development sometimes relies on a mutually recognized order
王用享于岐山,吉无咎。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The king makes an offering at Mount Qi. Favorable, without blame.
Mount Qi and the king’s offering have specific historical and cultural associations. Legge also connects them with the political standing of the Zhou ancestors. This is his historical interpretation, not something spelled out in full by the line itself.
A modern analogy is growing within clear authorization and cooperation arrangements. When receiving support, explain what you are responsible for; do not interpret temporary recognition as permission for unlimited expansion.

六五 · Give progress steps that can be checked
貞吉,升階。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Constancy is favorable: ascending by steps.
Ascending steps gives the upward movement places to stand. Legge speaks of the ease and appropriateness of proceeding by steps while retaining the requirement of constancy.
Divide a larger learning goal into testable stages: understand, try, then review. After each step, assess what you have mastered. This is steadier than continually raising numerical targets.

上六 · Notice when you no longer know why you keep climbing
冥升,利于不息之貞。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Ascending in darkness. Unceasing constancy is beneficial.
Legge interprets ascent in darkness as blindly continuing upward: even after getting what one wanted, one still wants more. The final phrase about persistence cannot be separated from that warning.
If additional tasks bring only a heavier burden, reconsider your purpose. What deserves continuity is an appropriate direction and the cultivation of character, not an endless increase in every measure of size, status, and speed.

Turning an enjoyable practice into a lasting skill
Original modern scenario
Someone learning woodcut wants to complete a complex work. She starts with basic cuts, then asks how to assess the composition. She keeps her trial prints and gradually identifies recurring errors, rather than demanding the most complex work of herself from the start.
When offered a place in a small exhibition, she checks the number of pieces, deadline, and display conditions. Being invited does not make her immediately agree to a larger plan. Each new step is connected to her actual abilities.
Later, as invitations increase, she turns down unsuitable events to preserve time for practice. This can still count as growth. Sheng’s reminder is not only to rise, but to keep progress in service of the skill one genuinely wants to develop.
Avoiding misreadings
-
Sheng promises neither promotion, increased wealth, nor success in an examination. Actual results depend on many specific conditions.
-
“A southern expedition” is not a personal lucky direction, and ascent in darkness is not an accusation against hardworking people. Whether to continue requires attention to purpose, feedback, and burden.
Three exercises
-
Describe a growth goal as a specific ability rather than simply “higher,” “more,” or “more famous.”
-
Plan one small step with results you can check, and decide where feedback will come from.
-
Identify a signal that should make you stop and reconsider, so progress does not become mere momentum.

Jian — Gradual Development (hexagram-53): Sheng emphasizes upward accumulation and steps; Jian emphasizes sequence and gradual development. Both invite questions about actual conditions, but they should not be combined into a formula that guarantees success.
When reading Sheng, ask: does the next step bring me closer to my real goal, or merely put me higher than I am now?
Textual note
The fourth line follows 享 in the base text’s main reading; the page also lists the variant 亨.
