The six lines of Jian repeatedly describe a wild goose progressing from the waterside and rocks to trees, a high mound, and feathers used in ceremony. This is not a neatly ascending timetable. Along the way are separation, danger, and difficulty finding a suitable landing place. Learning from Jian requires attention both to the sequence of a process and to the circumstances of each step.
渐 is hexagram 53 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with the symbol ䷴. Its lower trigram is 艮☶ and its upper trigram is 巽☴, traditionally associated with mountain and wind respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初六, 六二, 九三, 六四, 九五, 上九. A solid line is yang; a broken line is yin. Nine and six identify yang and yin in the line labels; they do not add extra lines.
Line structure (bottom to top): 0 0 1 0 1 1
Six-line figure, displayed top to bottom; line numbering starts at the bottom.

The judgment
漸:女歸吉,利貞。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Gradual development: the woman’s marriage is favorable. Constancy is beneficial.
The woman’s marriage concerns an ancient marriage arrangement. Legge treats it as an example of an important undertaking completed through a sequence of steps, then extends Jian to advancement in office and growth. The marriage institution, the translator’s political analogy, and this article’s modern application should remain distinct.
Today we can retain the reminders about preparation and sequence without accepting ancient gender and household hierarchies. Gradual progress is not a requirement to wait in an unsuitable relationship. Whether a step is worth continuing depends on actual conditions and the wishes of those involved.

Interpretation in the Ten Wings
The Commentary on the Judgment and the Commentary on the Images belong to the Yi Zhuan, the commentaries usually called the “Ten Wings.” Here their explanations are kept distinct from the judgment and line texts, before turning to modern applications for study.
The Commentary on the Judgment speaks of gradual advance and advancing properly, explaining sustained action through stillness and gentle penetration. The Commentary on the Images depicts wood on a mountain and relates it to dwelling in worthy virtue and improving customs. The image of a growing tree emphasizes accumulation without promising that every kind of waiting ends well.
For ordinary study, this article proposes developing sufficient ability and support for one stage before taking on the next. Adjusting the sequence or briefly returning to fill a learning gap can be more reasonable than forcing progress to meet a predetermined date.
初六 · On first arriving at the edge, learn about your surroundings
鴻漸于干,小子厲,有言,无咎。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The wild goose gradually reaches the shore. Danger for the young person; there is talk, but no blame.
The wild goose reaches the waterside; a young person faces danger and talk. Legge reads this young person as a junior official of low standing, preserving the lack of support on first entering a new situation.
When entering a field for the first time, learn its rules, observe its needs, and ask questions. Being criticized does not establish that you have already done something wrong, nor that every opinion should be ignored. Check the specific content.

六二 · A firm landing place allows unhurried replenishment
鴻漸于磐,飲食衎衎,吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The wild goose gradually reaches the rock, eating and drinking at ease. Favorable.
A rock and cheerful eating and drinking form a comparatively settled scene. Legge reads a temporary stability reached after progress.
After completing a stage, organize what you have learned, replenish your materials, and enjoy what you have accomplished. Rest and regrouping do not betray growth; they give later action a real foundation.

九三 · Notice breaks in relationships and support during progress
鴻漸于陸,夫征不復,婦孕不育,凶;利禦寇。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The wild goose gradually reaches the land. The husband departs and does not return; the woman is pregnant but does not raise a child. Unfavorable. Defending against raiders is beneficial.
The line contains severe images: a husband departing without returning and a pregnancy without a child being raised, followed by the advantage of defending against raiders. Legge interprets the danger as a departure from appropriate connections; his moralizing account also has historical limitations.
The modern analogy concerns only the risk of neglecting care and cooperation while advancing. The ancient text cannot predict pregnancy, loss of a child, or a partner’s departure, and real reproductive difficulties cannot be attributed to anyone’s character.

六四 · Find a reliable support in an imperfectly suitable setting
鴻漸于木,或得其桷,无咎。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The wild goose gradually reaches a tree; perhaps it finds a level branch. No blame.
The wild goose reaches a tree and may find a level place to rest. Legge observes that geese are not suited to gripping branches, making a suitable foothold important.
When entering a new task, look for a small area that can be adjusted if existing methods do not fit. Admitting that the setting is imperfect helps you make arrangements instead of forcing yourself to look effortlessly competent at once.

九五 · Do not crudely equate delay with personal failure
鴻漸于陵,婦三歲不孕,終莫之勝,吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The wild goose gradually reaches the mound. The woman is not pregnant for three years; in the end, the obstruction cannot prevail. Favorable.
The high mound is placed beside three years without pregnancy; the final phrase says that the obstruction ultimately cannot prevail. Legge understands the image as eventual accomplishment after obstruction.
This can prompt reflection on goals not yet reached, but cannot guarantee that a period of waiting will be rewarded. In particular, “three years” must not become a fertility deadline, advice to delay medical assessment, or a claim that childbearing is necessary to complete a life.

上九 · Growth also has value in leaving a useful example
鴻漸于陸,其羽可用為儀,吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The wild goose gradually reaches the land. Its feathers can be used for ceremonial adornment. Favorable.
The base text still reads 陸 in the top line. Legge interprets it as a higher place and sees feathers suitable for ceremonial adornment as an image of continuing to contribute after reaching a height.
When a skill matures, organize methods and share experience so that those following can avoid unnecessary detours. Contribution need not keep enlarging your own position, nor require others to copy the same path of development.

A learner gradually takes responsibility for an exhibition tour
Original modern scenario
A volunteer wants to lead a complete exhibition tour. She first learns one section, follows an experienced guide to observe, and then tries explaining a few works clearly. She revises her explanations according to visitors’ questions rather than measuring progress only by the number of pages prepared.
On her first independent tour, some questions exceed her knowledge. She records them, explains that they need further checking, and works with others to add the relevant material. One moment of difficulty does not invalidate all her earlier learning.
As experience grows, she organizes common questions from newcomers to help others begin. Jian here means taking on responsibility in sequence, receiving real feedback, and sharing experience, rather than following a ladder of success that everyone must climb identically.
Avoiding misreadings
-
Jian does not guarantee marriage, childbirth, or career development. Ancient marriage and childbearing images cannot make real relationship or health judgments for anyone.
-
Slowness itself does not establish correctness. Waiting also needs purpose, feedback, and necessary adjustment.
Three exercises
-
Divide a goal into interdependent steps and explain why one of them cannot simply be skipped.
-
Check what the current stage really lacks: practice, information, support, or a chance to choose a different direction.
-
Write down one method you have learned and can share. You need not know everything before beginning to help others.

Sheng — Ascent (hexagram-46): Sheng emphasizes growth through upward accumulation and steps; Jian emphasizes sequence and adaptation through the goose’s different landing places. Read together, they invite checking both where you are going and whether every step has secure footing.
When reading Jian, ask: do I need the next step now, or first to make this small step truly secure?
Textual note
The top line retains 陸 from the base text. It is not silently replaced by another transmitted reading, and Legge’s interpretation of a high place is not presented as the only literal meaning.
