Guimei directly concerns ancient marriage. The younger accompanying women, Di Yi marrying off his younger sister, sleeves, and sacrificial rites all carry the unequal household institutions of their time. Reading requires acknowledging this background without polishing it into a purely romantic story or using it to prescribe women’s positions today.
归妹 is hexagram 54 in the traditional King Wen sequence, with the symbol ䷵. Its lower trigram is 兑☱ and its upper trigram is 震☳, traditionally associated with lake and thunder respectively. Count the lines from the bottom: 初九, 九二, 六三, 九四, 六五, 上六. A solid line is yang; a broken line is yin. Nine and six identify yang and yin in the line labels; they do not add extra lines.
Line structure (bottom to top): 1 1 0 1 0 0
Six-line figure, displayed top to bottom; line numbering starts at the bottom.

The judgment
歸妹:征凶,无攸利。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Marrying off the younger sister: advancing is unfavorable. Nothing is advantageous.
Legge specifically notes that 妹 means a younger sister, reading Guimei as marrying off the younger sister. He explains its constraints through a subordinate marital position, then draws an analogy with ruler and minister. He records defects in the institution, although several comments retain clear gender and moral prejudices.
Modern study need not inherit those prejudices. Instead, examine whether an arrangement is informed and voluntary, and whether rights and responsibilities are proportionate. The judgment’s unfavorable language cannot establish that a particular marriage will fail, or turn inequality itself into a destiny someone must accept.

Interpretation in the Ten Wings
The Commentary on the Judgment and the Commentary on the Images belong to the Yi Zhuan, the commentaries usually called the “Ten Wings.” Here their explanations are kept distinct from the judgment and line texts, before turning to modern applications for study.
The Commentary on the Judgment links marriage with the interaction of heaven and earth, then explains the unfavorable advance through the line positions. The Commentary on the Images depicts thunder above a lake and speaks of considering the lasting end and recognizing defects, shifting attention from the beginning to long-term consequences.
This article applies that concern to ordinary cooperation. Initial willingness to join does not mean understanding the long-term responsibilities. Discussing how to leave, how contributions will be recognized, and how opinions can be expressed helps people make a more fully informed choice.
初九 · Ability can exist in a restricted role, but the restrictions must be seen
歸妹以娣,跛能履,征吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The younger sister is married off as an accompanying wife. Though lame, able to walk; advancing is favorable.
娣 here concerns an ancient accompanying or subordinate marriage role. “Lame but able to walk” compares limited mobility with continued ability to act. Legge interprets this as making a contribution from a limited position.
Today this cannot require people to accept unequal treatment or justify judging ability or status through physical disability. Distinguish carefully between what you can contribute and which institutional limits need to be explained and changed.

九二 · Retain your judgment when outside response is limited
眇能視,利幽人之貞。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Though sight is impaired, one can see. The constancy of a secluded person is beneficial.
Impaired sight that still sees is placed beside the constancy of a secluded person. Legge’s explanation invokes an ideal of female fidelity, which must not be presented as an ethical requirement everyone should accept today.
In cooperation with limited support, retain clear principles and factual records. Holding to principles does not require waiting for one person indefinitely or enduring an unreasonable arrangement alone.

六三 · Before joining, establish whether the terms have changed
歸妹以須,反歸以娣。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The younger sister is married off in the position described as xu; she returns to marry as an accompanying wife. The meaning of xu is disputed.
Interpretations of 須 differ. Legge adopts a reading involving a low position and returning to accept subordinate status, adding a harsh judgment of the character. This article does not treat that judgment as an assessment of real women.
The modern analogy is a mismatch between a promised role and the role actually offered. You can ask again, clarify, or decline. Having prepared to join does not oblige you to accept every downgraded condition.

九四 · Do not decide hastily merely to meet a date
歸妹愆期,遲歸有時。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The younger sister’s marriage passes its expected date. Delayed marriage has its proper time.
愆期 means passing an appointed time. Legge reads a situation of not rushing to marry and waiting for a suitable opportunity.
If a collaboration has not been clarified, its start can be postponed. Whether delay is appropriate depends on actual reasons. It is neither a prediction that a better partner will certainly appear nor a reason to keep someone waiting indefinitely.

六五 · Outward display cannot replace real substance
帝乙歸妹,其君之袂,不如其娣之袂良,月幾望,吉。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: Di Yi marries off his younger sister. The principal woman’s sleeves are not as fine as her attendant’s. The moon is nearly full. Favorable.
Di Yi marrying off his younger sister, the contrast between the principal woman’s sleeves and her attendant’s, and the nearly full moon are the line’s central images. Legge emphasizes the simplicity implied when someone of higher rank wears less impressive decoration than her attendant.
For a modern reflection, check whether titles, clothing, or ceremony have become too important as displays of worth. The nearly full moon cannot imply that women should always remain below men. That is a hierarchical idea in certain old commentaries, not a requirement of this article.

上六 · Complete forms may still conceal empty commitments
女承筐无實,士刲羊无血,无攸利。
Original editorial rendering, not a quotation from Legge: The woman holds a basket without contents; the man cuts a sheep without blood. Nothing is advantageous.
The woman holds an empty basket; the man cuts a sheep, but there is no blood. The ritual actions exist while the actual offerings are absent. Legge reads a marriage agreement or rite that cannot truly be completed.
After a collaboration acquires a name and a group photograph, it still needs actual resources and specific fulfillment. If key commitments remain empty, adding more ceremony will not solve the problem.

Joining an established creative group
Original modern scenario
An illustrator receives an invitation to collaborate. The group calls her a co-creator but in practice asks her only to execute a plan already decided. She first asks whether she can participate in discussion, how credit will be given, and how much time revisions will require.
Once they clarify matters, both sides recognize that they understood the role differently and adjust the scope. She can choose one clearly defined task or choose not to join. She need not accept vague conditions to preserve the initial enthusiasm.
This analogy concerns information and choice when entering an arrangement. It does not convert ancient marriage hierarchies into something normal or inevitable in modern workplaces or relationships.
Avoiding misreadings
-
Guimei does not predict failed marriages, affairs, or who is unworthy of whom. Its figure must not be used to accuse anyone of relationship misconduct.
-
Ancient subordinate wives, ideals of chastity, and disability metaphors need critical reading. They must not perpetuate contempt for women, unmarried people, or people with disabilities.
Three exercises
-
Before joining an arrangement, write down separately the role promised and the work actually expected.
-
Clarify what opinions you may express, what you can refuse, and how you can leave.
-
Identify one commitment that has form but no substance yet, and ask for specifics.

When reading Guimei, ask: am I entering this arrangement knowingly and voluntarily, or have I already agreed before understanding it?
